Alfa Romeo Stelvio - 2.0 TURBO BENZINA ENGINE

Given the curiosity aroused by the presence of two side pans on the engine in question, we thought we would publish a brief description of the general characteristics.

The 2.0 Turbo petrol engine is made entirely of aluminium to offer an unprecedented balance of power and environmental friendliness.

This longitudinally arranged in-line four-cylinder engine features the latest MultiAir injection system with operating pressures from 5 to 200 bar.

The engine is equipped with a turbocharger with an electro-actuated exhaust gas bypass waste gate valve.

A further feature of the turbocharger is the direct connection between the cylinder exhaust and the turbine impeller. This allows a pressure pulse type turbocharging, typical of sports engines, where the turbine is more active in favour of performance.

COOLING SYSTEM

The general engine cooling system is divided into two sub-systems:

  • HT high temperature cooling system.
  • Low-temperature cooling system LT.

The two plants HT and LT are separate and not communicating. The presence of two specific expansion vessels, one for the HT system and the other for the LT system, confirms that they are independent systems.

Low-temperature cooling system LT

The function of the LT low-temperature cooling system is to cool the water used to cool the air circulating in the intercoolers and turbocharger.

Since the LT system is separate from the HT engine cooling system, it cannot make use of the thrust of the engine's water pump.

As a result, water circulation within the LT system is ensured by an electric pump. The latter is controlled by the ECM motor control module, which regulates its rotation speed according to the air intake temperature value.

HT high temperature cooling system

The HT high-temperature cooling system (Fig. 7) has the function of cooling the water used to cool the engine.

The HT high temperature cooling system cools the following systems:

  • Engine base.
  • Cylinder head.
  • Engine oil.
  • Exhaust gas in the low-pressure EGR heat exchanger.

In addition, the engine coolant extends to the interior of the passenger compartment heater for heating the passenger compartment.

The coolant is cooled by a main radiator located in the central area behind the front bumper. The main radiator utilises the dynamic air flow produced by the speed of the car and the air flow forced by the electric fan.
