MTA (FCA) gearbox problem: Dual logic mot. 1.2 and 1.4

The car, a Grande Punto, enters the workshop with a complaining customer, of "failure to engage gears".
The following errors are found in diagnosis :

P1818 = clutch subsystem error
P060C = ECU error

Initial suggestionCheck whether there is alignment between clutch and engine revs.
With the engine in neutral, clutch rpm must be zero (as the clutch must not be dragged), while engine rpm must be between 850/900 rpm (engine idle).
First recommended interventionPerform active EOL (End Of Line) diagnosis and clutch self-calibration.

Following this procedure, the situation does not improve, so Tech is asked to check the clutch revolution value again to see if it is still in drag: it is confirmed that the clutch is still rotating.

At this point, a possible mechanical problem had to be considered.
Recommended second interventionCheck whether the clutch control lever releases; the test was unsuccessful, so it is suggested to disassemble the gearbox bell and check for mechanical damage; in fact, irreparable damage is found to the disengagement control shaft (see image below)

  1. Driven disc
  2. Plate pusher
  3. Thrust bearing
  4. Disengagement control shaft
  5. Disengagement lever

All in all, we can say that in this specific case, the errors set in the gearbox ECU could have been misleading, and only careful diagnosis prevented the ECU from being incorrectly replaced.

Until the next report...
