In this way, the exhaust gas is forced to flow through a porous filter wall, which results in the separation of the soot. In the case of Mercedes, a backpressure-optimised particulate filter with high filtering efficiency is used, which at the same time is maintenance-free and self-adjusting. But in contrast to diesels where a ceramic particle filter made of silicon carbide (SiC) is used, 'cordierite', a particularly heat-resistant mineral, has been chosen for petrol engines.

Gradually, therefore, the GPF filter will be applied to the new vehicle fleet, but as with any new equipment, only time will tell what the implications will be, especially with regard to wear and maintenance.

See you next time.

As of September 2017, all newly type-approved vehicles must comply with the Euro 6C standard, regulations that will be mandatory from September 2018 [...]

[26
